PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk. (“Indocement” or “the Company”) has been a leading producer of quality cement products to the Indonesia market since 1975. The year 2010 therefore marks the 35th anniversary of the Company. In 2001, the German based HeidelbergCement Group became Indocement’s majority shareholder.
Indocement maintains 3 factories, which together host 12 plants. Citeureup Factory in Bogor, West Java, which operates 9 of these plants is one of the world’s largest cement factories. The other 2 factories are located in Palimanan, Cirebon, West Java, with 2 plants; and in Tarjun, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, with a single plant. In 2010, Indocement added an additional 1.5 million tons per year capacity to its factory in Palimanan to bring the Company’s total installed design capacity to 18.6 million tons of cement per year.
Indocement offers a diversified range of cement products which are sold under the “Tiga Roda” brand. These include Portland Composite Cement (PCC), Ordinary Portland Cement (Type I, Type II and Type V), Oil Well Cement, White Cement and White Mortar TR30. Indocement is Indonesia’s only producer of White Cement. PCC, which was introduced in 2005 now accounts for the majority of the Company’s sales volume. This cement uses a lower ratio of clinker substituting alternative materials, which help to enhance durability and resistance to weather and chemical erosion. The use of alternative materials also lowers energy requirements and CO2 emissions, and is a leading component of Indocement’s commitment to maintain environmental sustainability in all of its operations.
Indocement has become a leading provider of bulk cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC). This business line is promoted through the Indocement subsidiary PT Pionirbeton Industri (Pionir), which also uses the “Tiga Roda” brand. To support this business line, Indocement acquired a second aggregate company in 2009, with approximately 95 million tons of reserves. The installation of new batching plants in 2010 has enabled Indocement to rapidly expand its market share for bulk cement and RMC, particularly in the key Jakarta and West Java markets. Indocement is now among the top 3 suppliers of bulk cement and RMC nationwide.
Indocement maintains a well established regime of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, which emphasize poverty reduction, education and the environment. Over the past decade Indocement has received numerous commendations for its work in sustainable development and for advancing the lives of residents living in communities near the Company’s operations. Among the awards received in 2010, Indocement received a first place ranking in the category of Manufacturer at the prestigious SGS Annual Quality Award for Corporate Social Responsibility to Society and the Environment. Indocement is, in a state of transition, the preliminary phase of a major push towards expansion. The additional capacity, which the Company will bring on-line in the coming 2 to 4 years will inevitably require extensive recruitment and training. Indocement Human Resources will be responsible for ensuring, not only the professionalism of the recruitment and training process, but also its cost efficiency. New recruits to the Company will be grouped according to workplace discipline. Each individual will be assigned a competency matrix, which defines the training regime they will need to complete prior to assuming their employment responsibilities.
During the interim period, before the recruitment cycle for the expansion begins, Indocement is continuing to fill gaps in its existing workforce requirements by outsourcing auxiliary functions, such as security and drivers for on-site transportation. This has enabled Indocement to focus on its core business activities, thereby increasing employee productivity.
Indocement invests in its workforce by mandating a comprehensive regime of clearly defined and targeted work force training modules. This training is supplementary to primary level orientation received by new recruits. On an annual basis, the duration of Indocement training is equivalent to 1.5% to 1.7% of total work hours. In 2010, the Company provided 201,396 hours of training comprising a diverse range of professional as well as personal enhancement modules. The majority of this training was provided for technical and soft skill development.
The company’s history of continuing growth and success is to a large extent the result of conducive working conditions and effort of all employees striving together to reach their mutual goals and objectives. The declaration of Quantum Challenge, the theme of our voyage to the achievement of Indocement Excellence, enhances the Values, the guiding principles of our conduct.
