Voice of America which was first aired in 1942, is a multimedia broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors agency. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, and various educational and cultural programs every week to 125 million listeners and viewers around the world.
Based in Washington DC, VOA has a network of hundreds of correspondents and stringers spread all over the world. In addition to satellite, VOA also spread via network broadcast affiliate stations, local stations which are scattered in thousands of cities, so as to reach more than 93 million listeners in the world. VOA was founded to meet the needs of the community the right message, honest and dependable. Guidelines underlying the activities of VOA broadcasts is a charter signed by President Gerald Ford and then passed into Law on July 12, 1976.
VOA Indonesia began broadcasting in 1942, shortly after the U.S. government established the VOA. And since then, VOA Indonesia continues to be in the air. During the first 56 years, people in Indonesia is only able to capture the VOA shortwave radio transmitted from outside Indonesia. However, since the reform era that began in 1998, press freedom and an end to government control over mass media, allow VOA to take the affiliate strategy to disseminate TV and radio programs. Now, the VOA has more than 240 FM and AM radio affiliates throughout Indonesia. More than 80 percent of VOA listeners catch a variety of programs on radio VOA affiliate. Beginning in 2000, VOA expanded its wings to produce television programs. VOA television programs can be watched on most television stations nationwide and over 30 local television.
