Job Summary:
The Systems Support Engineer performs a broad range of information technology infrastructure tasks with the primary focus being the server infrastructure. This includes physical server buildup and deployment, physical and logical networking, and Microsoft infrastructure design and deployment. This position will undertake the lead role on many infrastructure initiatives under the supervision of senior engineers. This position will complete projects and tasks utilizing junior engineers when necessary. The system support engineer will help guide the development of and maintain the validity of Pennwell best practices and verify these standards are being followed throughout the enterprise. The engineer works with immediate team members, client services, project managers, and senior engineers to execute project tasks and suggest project direction. The position will also assign and manage day to day issues and tasks with junior infrastructure employees.
Responsibilities:
- Act as project lead for some infrastructure initiatives as assigned and manages the execution of these projects through to completion.
- Perform server system build up including OS installation.
- Configure the servers in accordance with Pennwell best practices and physically networks and brings online all new and re-purposed server hardware with a base operating system and all Pennwell mandated agents, patches, and applications.
- Manages server base standards and policies, works with senior engineers and management to guide these policies and procedures for the most efficient and current methodologies as they apply to the Pennwell network.
- Maintains the Pennwell owned server room including all remote site server rooms and co-location facility to ensure all cabling and servers are neat, organized, and clearly labeled.
- Responsible for day-to-day high level administration activities for core infrastructure support applications including backup and recovery systems, name server systems, and centralized management applications.
- Responsible for managing routine UNIX administration tasks.
- Responsible for managing OS patches including server manufacturer firmware and driver maintenance.
- Performs tier 2 support for all issues not directly addressable junior engineers.
- Performs various infrastructure tasks as assigned or required.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree plus 3 years experience or equivalent works experience.
- Posses project and time management skills as it applies to infrastructure projects.
- Ability to communicate and work with non-IT groups and customers within the organization when required.
- Advanced Microsoft Windows based servers and computer system troubleshooting skills
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Infrastructure core services including Active Directory, DNS, RADIUS, LDAP, IAS, and DHCP.
- Working knowledge of networking principles such as subnets, 802.1x, routing, cabling, and wireless configuration.
- Advanced understanding of backup methodologies and tape library maintenance.
- Advanced understanding of enterprise monitoring systems and methodologies.
- Extensive knowledge of virtual machine technology and how it can be leveraged in a resilient network environment.
- Exposure to UNIX operating systems including FreeBSD, Solaris, and CentOS.
- A+, MCP, or MCSE Certifications a plus.
- Knowledge of backup software a plus.
- Experience in a mid-size to large corporate environment
- Experience with HP server hardware a plus.
