Samudera started its business as a shipping agent for international shipping companies such as Hapag-Lloyd and Tokyo Senpaku Kaisha in the 1950's. Its business then developed to other transportation related services such as trucking, stevedoring and terminal operator.
PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk, the holding company of Samudera Indonesia Group, was established in 1964 to fill the needs of inter-island sea transportation as declared by the government at the time. From this, ships began to be purchased. For more than a half century, Samudera has grown and expanded its business from shipping agency into ocean going shipping and become an integrated cargo transportation to serve both domestic and international customers.
Samudera's business has developed along with the the economic growth in Indonesia.
The oil boom in the 1970's gave a chance for Samudera to enter the tanker business and offshore services. When infrastucture started to be developed in Indonesia, Samudera took this opportunity by developing project logistics and transporting heavy cargoes to build factories and power plants, as well as finding solutions to move other difficult to move items.
The changing pattern of delivering goods from the conventional way to containerization had a big impact on the global shipping industry. The advantages of containers were clear, and Samudera quickly developed a feeder shipping system in 1990. Further expansion into the fast moving industry of logistics services opened up more opportunity for Samudera to spread its business into the related areas of logistics and distribution centers, container depots for storage and ship and container repair.
