Position Summary
The Assistant Barge Engineer is responsible for carrying out the work activity and objectives established by Atwood Oceanics and the Barge Engineer with the marine and deck operations crews. This includes but is not limited to material control, deck maintenance and repair, emergency preparedness, equipment inspection and repair, and assisting with deck management and supervision.
Essential Functions
- Maintenance of all equipment in your area of responsibility so as to minimize downtime and major equipment breakdowns.
- Work with Barge Engineer to vessel is in compliance with the applicable government rules and regulations, government agencies, and regulatory bodies. Specific attention is required in the following areas:
- Assure all documents, plans and notices are displayed as required.
- Assure all vessel documents are in good order.
- Maintain safety and emergency equipment, fire fighting equipment, and seaworthiness of Mobile Offshore Units.
- Complete, submit, and maintain company-required paperwork to include: Deck Logs, Crane Record Book, Regulatory Documentation, and Classification Documentation.
- Coordinate work boats and helicopter logistics involving Mobile Offshore Unit.
- Assure rig is properly loaded as to variable load capacity according to operating manual. Ensure that daily stability calculations are completed and recorded and "light ship" record is current.
- Supervises with Barge Engineer the following during rig moves:
Mooring operations (semi-submersibles)
Tow Vessel Operations (all)
Towing (all)
Watertight integrity (all)
- Train and develop Ballast Control Operators.
- Coordinate the Company’s Preventive Maintenance Programs in your area of responsibility.
- Operate in such a manner which results in achieving or helping to achieve the Operating Plan and Safety Goals in the following areas: Safety, Downtime, and Focused Costs (Repair, Maintenance, Material Control, Catering).
- Maintain adequate inventory levels for equipment in your area of responsibility. Coordinate receiving and issuing of parts and maintenance of material control.
- Maintain housekeeping in your area of responsibility such that company objectives are met. Specific emphasis is placed on the following: Living Quarters; Galley Facilities; Decks; Hull Appearance, both external and internal; and Life Saving & Fire Fighting facilities.
Safety Accountabilities
- Advanced professional with operating, engineering or specialist skills and demonstrated competence. Alternatively, a general department supervisor responsible for the direction of all day to day operating activities (including backshifts). Responsible for a major departments’ safety performance.
- Ensures that personal behaviors/work practices are a role model for others and in line with Fleet safety standards such as Standard Work Instructions and Safe Operating Procedures.
- Safety responsibilities include the co-ordination and planning of major operating and maintenance activities.
- Typically, a supervisor with direct responsibility for all safety requirements for the entire 24 hour period (whether or not they are present in the Department i.e. backshifts)
- Leads small teams on specific safety improvement initiatives and projects.
- Demonstrates understanding of safety audit protocols.
- Identifies improvement to safety standards for a work area by introducing upfront prevention strategies and puts measures in place to minimise risks and improve the overall work environment.
- Participates in investigations regarding incidents in the immediate work area
- Coaches others on safety issues and can conducts or co-ordinates safety tool box meetings etc.
- Participates in reviews of results from operating tests or changes in work procedures to carefully ensure there are no impacts to work area.
- Leads and pays close attention to “housekeeping,” double- checks and takes additional safety precautions to ensure no-one is put at risk by own work or the work of others.
- Takes no short cuts and encourages other team members to take due care and not put others at risk.
- Participates in safety initiatives/committees where appropriate.
- Advises other Departments and evaluates others’ working around their areas of responsibility to ensure that safety procedures are well understood and followed.
- Anticipates risks or failure.
- Communicates information and feedback from accident/incident data and re-hab processes and takes action to improve safety conditions. Encourages others to do the same.

- Participates and guides investigations of injuries/incidents in their own and other departments.
Physical Requirements
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling are required frequently. Requires lifting and substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles
