ANTV was launched on 1 March 1993 as a local television station in Lampung province. In the same month it was awarded a government license for nationwide broadcasting, and moved its studio to Jakarta. On 30 April 2006, Rupert Murdoch's Asian broadcaster News Corporation through STAR TV and Fox International Channels bought a 20% stake in antv (split from TV7). Indonesia law, foreign companies can only have a 20% stake in local media companies and antv has 24 relay stations covering 155 cities across Indonesia. It reaches 130 million people.
Relationships with MTV Networks
When MTV wanted to expand to Asia, a block, MTV: Music Television Indonesia and Nickelodeon shows were brodcast under a treaty between Bakrie & Brothers and Viacom in 1993, antv showed its first music and kids entertainment programming services. However, antv removed the MTV Networks programming in 2003, after MTV dropped out of the venture.
