Subsurface Safety Valve Equipment Specialist British Petroleum

Our business is the exploration, production, refining, trading and distribution of energy. This is what we do, and we do it on a truly global scale. With a workforce of 80,000 employees, BP operates with business activities and customers in more than 80 countries across six continents. Every day, we serve millions of customers around the world. We are continually looking for talented, committed and ambitious people to help us shape the face of energy for the future.

BP's Upstream segment focuses on finding reserves of oil and gas, developing the means to extract and process it and then consistently producing and transporting it to market. This involves using cutting edge technology to find the energy reserves, the ability to drill thousands of meters under the ground, designing, building and operating some of the world's largest most complex production onshore / offshore facilities and finally being able to transport these fluids, in order to provide energy to the world.

The focus of this position is on the design, selection, installation, and operation of subsurface safety valves, subsurface barrier valves, and associated down hole equipment across BP’s global well portfolio, both onshore and offshore. This position not only provides expertise on the equipment, but an inherent understanding of the systems and interfaces, especially with respect to risk identification and remediation. Life of well operations and reliability are key parts of this role.

The role covers technical management and training with a particular emphasis on assuring the safety, quality, and reliability of all technical aspects of design, selection, installation and operation.

This includes (1) development and implementation of BP practices and guides across BP’s global operations, (2) ensuring that BP and contractors comply with relevant practices and regulations, (3) strengthening BP’s skills and competencies, (4) expert technical support & consulting, and (5) technology planning, development, and implementation.

This role will report to the Completions Design Manager in Houston, will be a member of a team of engineering specialists, will support both completions and interventions activities, and will have a direct input to PSCM sector activities.

Key accountability:
  • Develop, maintain, and deploy engineering practices and guides to ensure that BP’s design and operation of subsurface safety and isolation barrier valves is performed in a safe, compliant, and reliable manner.
  • Ensure risk processes with respect to design and operation of subsurface safety valves and subsurface barrier valves are in place and effectively implemented through the Global Wells Organization.
  • Establish global competency standards for BP operations staff and BP engineers and provide training resources to facilitate competency development.
  • Provide expert consulting and guidance to the Global Wells Organization on design, selection, installation, QA/QC, operations, and post analysis, including the impact on well construction and life of well operational requirements. The emphasis will be on complex wells and/or specialized applications.
  • Deepen engineering capability and knowledge across the Global Wells Organization in subsurface safety valves and isolation barrier valves by coaching and mentoring, owning and deploying BP and jointly managed training courses, identifying and sharing best practices, and ensuring proper tools and processes are in place (e.g. databases, software, communities of practice).
  • Facilitate uptake of new technology through the implementation of qualification processes and testing, along with the design and evaluation of field trials.
  • Work with PSCM to effectively manage our subsurface safety valves and subsurface barrier valves suppliers, including input to contractor technical, reliability, and safety requirements, performance management & metrics, contract bids and evaluations, etc.
  • Provide BP’s focal point for industry relationships such as API committees, SPE forums and workshops, and involvement in joint industry technology and reliability projects.
Essential Education:
  • Bachelors degree in engineering
Essential experience and job requirements:
  • A proven track record of engineering related and operations based experience with a variety of subsurface safety and isolation barrier valves. But the candidate must have demonstrated expert skills in subsurface safety valve engineering and operations. This expertise should include an engineering and/or operations leadership position with a recognized international service supplier or operating company.
  • Experience with both onshore land and offshore operations.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of industry practices, procedures, standards, and regulations, including familiarity with current and past ISO, API, and NORSOK standards (API Specification 14A / ISO 10432 Specification for Subsurface Safety Valve Equipment, ISO 28781 - Down Hole Equipment - Subsurface Barrier Valves and Related Equipment, NORSOK D-010 Well Integrity in Drilling and Well Operations).
  • Proven knowledge and experience in industry subsurface safety and isolation barrier valve design and operations, including in-depth understanding of industry performance testing and reliability evaluation methods.
  • Experience in (1) auditing including compliance with operating management systems and QA/QC processes and (2) integration of subsurface safety and isolation barrier valve operational requirements into corporate safety management systems.
