Role synopsis:
The Alaska Region has reshaped its 50 year future to enable “at scale” delivery of their billions of bbls of light, viscous and heavy oil resources. This exciting future is not without its challenges in figuring out how to deliver best in class capital efficiency for our surface facility investment, on par with smaller independent competitors in similar arctic regions. The teams working these opportunities will lay the groundwork for 20+ years of new pad development as well as expansion of existing pads and facilities and will help shape the surface facility production technology plan required to underpin our strategy. Key to this strategy is standardization, leveraging economies of scale and simplifying our operating philosophy.

The Appraisal team within the Developments organization manages the critically important Front End of all Category 5 and above sized projects on the North Slope. The individual who takes on this role will ensure that resource progression programs, such as Sag at Scale, M&S Pad, I-Pad and viscous/heavy oil and gas resources are managed following BP’s processes.

The potential projects are currently valued at over $10B and underpin BPXA’s future in Alaska. Most of these projects are in pre-appraise and are being worked to progress them to appraise.

The Appraisal Development Manager is accountable for the appraisal efforts for Well Program projects across the North Slope assets to underpin the Region’s near term delivery targets and long term strategy. The Appraisal Dev Mgr is responsible for driving the projects/programs during the Appraise and Select stages and integrating the activity with other disciplines and support functions. The team is comprised of 5-7 Development Engineering positions and supported by central project services and finance teams. The Alaska Projects organization has two EPMS contracts as well as a number of contracts with engineering consultancy firms to support conceptual work.

This position reports to the Alaska Appraisal General Manager.

Key accountabilities:
  • Manage the pipeline of possible Well Pad Program projects and ensure rigorous evaluation and progression to a Select stage DSP.
  • Deliver quality efforts to AFE cost targets and schedule
  • Ensure integrated master planning and budgeting for the overall program of projects
  • Ensure project/program appraisal risks are understood, communicated and mitigated.
  • Lead HSSE performance of BP staff and all contractors
  • Effectively manage consultants and contractors in project delivery
  • Provide appropriate communication of project status to all major stakeholders
  • Ensure seamless transition of projects to Define/Execute teams
  • Development of staffing plans and budgets
  • Capture and incorporate lessons learnt from previous projects
Essential Education:
  • Engineering Degree.
Essential experience and job requirements:
  • Minimum 10 years related experience of which 5 of those must be in project appraisal and execution. Demonstrated performance in effective application of CVP/MPcp. Strong integrator within functions, particularly Resource, Projects, Operations and Finance. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to lead teams of BP staff and contractor staff with focus on value generation, inherently safer design, cost/schedule performance and constructabilty. Must be a strong conceptual thinker with strong business acumen. Must be comfortable in dealing with ambiguity.
Desirable criteria & qualifications:
  • Experience on at least one large E&P project. Involvement in all major components of a projects, conceptual & detailed engineering, contracting, construction and startup. Experience in managing an EPMS contractor is desirable. Experience in Subsurface, Operations and/or Finance a plus.
