At the end of the 1980s, the political changes in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe offered new opportunities, and Heidelberg Cement became the largest investor in the building materials industry of the region. In the 1990s, the international expansion accelerated. The acquisition of the leading Belgian and Scandinavian cement producers CBR and Scancem opened up new markets in Western and Northern Europe, as well as in Africa and Asia. The entrance into Indonesia followed in 2001 and again created a significant increase in capacity. Our objective ”Priority for growing markets“ was the driving force behind our engagements in China, India, Kazakhstan, Georgia, the Ukraine and Russia over the last several years.
