The U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya is seeking an individual for the position of Information Assistant in the Public Affairs Office.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The incumbent works directly with media outlets to get coverage of consulate activities and programs, organizes press conferences, and places press releases. S/He assists Consul General (CG) and other officers in preparing and translating remarks. S/He also monitors local media and prepares daily press briefing for CG and section chiefs. S/He handles all social media and works closely with Information section in the U.S. Embassy Jakarta to coordinate press releases and proved local stories for inclusion in Jakarta-produces press summaries. The incumbent travels with Public Affairs Officer and CG to provide support at media events outside Surabaya.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
- A Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, political science, economics, journalism, international relations or communication is required.
- At least four years of progressively responsible experience in the media field as a journalist, editor, or public relations/advertising specialist, or a combination of similar experience is required.
- Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English and Bahasa Indonesia are required. Language proficiency will be tested.
- A thorough knowledge of Indonesia’s media, political, economic, social, religious, and education environment. General familiarity with key mass media, government, military, cultural, business, and labor leaders is required. Knowledge of journalistic and public relations techniques sufficient to help meet Consulate’s public diplomacy goals. General knowledge of U.S. political and social processes and of foreign policy issues relating to U.S - Indonesia bilateral relations.
- Outgoing and at ease with members of the press, government, and general public. High degree of initiative and the desire to establish and maintain contacts in coordination with other consulate sections. Ability to translate quickly and interpret accurately. Sound intellectual judgment, flexibility, and adaptability to changing schedules and unforeseen circumstances. Ability to work with a variety of Americans and other foreigners.
- Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet applications, slide presentations and emails).
- When fully qualified, U.S. Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) and U.S. Veterans are given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate specifically address the required qualifications above in the application.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA
- Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful candidacy.
- Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
- Current Ordinarily Resident employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.
- Currently employed U.S. Citizen EFMs who hold a Family Member Appointment (FMA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.
- Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment unless currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
- The candidate must be able to obtain and hold an FSN security clearance.
